Moorhead/Vergas Duo Find Fourth Title at 22nd Annual Kolar Toyota ALS WalleyeTournament!

Island Lake— For the fourth time in the tournament's 22-year history, the pairing of Josh Fankhanel (Moorhead, MN) and Jason Schrupp (Vergas, MN) bested their competition in the Kolar Toyota ALS Walleye Tournament on Island Lake. The duo's five walleyes weighed in at 9.98 pounds to top the field of over 350 anglers competing and raising funds to fight ALS.

"There was no magic trick to it," said Fankhanel about their winning haul. "We got to our spot early and let the fish come to us."  "We just really love to be on the water," added Schrupp. "And this is a great group of people and a fantastic cause to support."

Brothers Joe and Dick Davidson of Esko, MN, finished second in the walleye basket standings at 8.89 pounds and Dave Goldberg and Mike Orman (Duluth) came in a close third with a basket weighing 8.88 pounds.

The tournament also features a Bass Challenge, and this year saw Doug Pirila (Proctor) and Greg Poetz (Winsted) defend their title with a basket of bass at 17.54 pounds. The Duluth duo of Michael Lubsack and Chad Mehlum reeled in the day's largest single bass, at 4.76 pounds.

The tournament is hosted by former UMD hockey star Jim Johnson, two-time Minnesota Twins world champion Kent Hrbek, and Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darby Hendrickson. All three also fish the tournament each year.

Over the tournament’s 22 years, the event has raised nearly $3 million to fight Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The ALS Association, MN/ND/SD Chapter provides support and services free of charge to individuals living with ALS. Services include durable medical equipment, communication devices and respite care for full-time family caregivers. Kolar Toyota became title sponsor of the event in 2007 and the dealership is actively involved with the year-round planning of the tournament.
