Dedication Overcomes Rain at 23rd Annual Kolar Toyota ALS Fishing Tournament!

Island Lake — Despite heavy rains and wind for much of the day, volunteers and anglers rallied for the cause at the 23rd Annual Kolar Toyota ALS Fishing Tournament on Island Lake. The pairing of Scott Davis (Lake Nebagamon, MN) and Dustin Carlson (Hermantown, MN) braved the elements and took home the walleye title. The duo's six walleyes weighed in at 15.02 pounds to top the field of over 300 anglers competing and raising funds to fight ALS.

"The fish seemed to bite the best when it rained the hardest," said Carlson of the day's difficult conditions. "We felt good about our chances during the downpour." Davis, who has fished this tournament for nine years, was without his usual partner and asked Carlson to step in. "I suppose Dustin earned his place in the boat for next year," said Davis after the two sealed the victory.

Wayne and Steve Reynolds (Duluth, MN) managed to reel in the day's biggest walleye, tipping the scales at 5.56 pounds, and went on to finish third place overall with 11.21 pounds in their basket.

Tom Murphy (Superior, WI) and Mike Jasper (Duluth, MN) finished second in the walleye standings at 12.78 pounds.

On the bass side of the tourney, Doug Pirila (Proctor, MN) and Greg Poetz (Winsted, MN) were victorious for the third consecutive year with a basket of bass weighing 14.71 pounds. Jason and Colby Manning finished second in the tightly contested bass field with 13.34 pounds of fish, and Hayden and Kraig Anderson (Poplar, WI) captured the biggest single bass at 3.55 pounds.

Winners of the ten grand prize drawings each won a $500 gift card from Marine General. Congratulations to Zach Axtman,  Adam Bersell, Steve Deraas, Matt Erjavec, Aaron Kolquist, Jason Manning, Allie Miller, Jeff Pykkonen, Matt Salo and Ted Thompson.

Thanks, Rhona, for being wiling to share your story!

The tournament is hosted by former Minnesota Twins world champion Kent Hrbek, UMD hockey legend Jim Johnson, and Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darby Hendrickson, all of whom support the tournament each year.

Over the tournament’s 23 years, the event has raised more than $3 million to fight Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The ALS Association, MN/ND/SD Chapter provides support and services free of charge to individuals living with ALS. Services include durable medical equipment, communication devices and respite care for full-time family caregivers. Kolar Toyota became title sponsor of the event in 2007 and the dealership is actively involved with the year-round planning of the tournament.
